Susan Reimer: "'American Sniper' and war as entertainment"
In Susan Reimer's latest article, she discusses her views regarding the new war drama film, 'American Sniper'. The action movie directed by Clint Eastwood was automatically a box office hit, breaking records with bringing in almost $90 million the opening weekend. While the world really enjoys the film, Susan Reimer does not feel the same way towards it. One of the most clearly expressed opinions was because 'American Sniper' centered around war as an enertainment source and Reimer has personal relations regarding war, she made a personal decision not to watch the film. Her earliest experience with something as gruesome as war was during her freshmen year in college, when she witnessed several of her peers killed while participating in an anti-war protest. This made her realize that kids her age were dying not only half way across the globe, but also in her community because of the terrible war. In addition to this, her son graduated from a military academy and served three terms in the Afghani war zone. For this reason, according to Reimer, she cannot be "entertained" by movies about this topic (page 2). However, in her article she encourages her readers to watch the film, in fact she says the world needs to "see what they endured." (page 2). While Susan Reimer made a clear argument as to why she will not be seeing 'American Sniper,' her overall diction assisted with strengthening her claim. Reimer utilized words such as "murdered," "naive," "hell," and "arrogant fool," to convey her strong perspective regarding the movie to her audience (pages 1-2). By using powerful word choice, Susan Reimer showed extreme passion towards this topic. These words also contributed to a bittersweet tone; the words themselves are ultimately harsh, they allowed Reimer to have a sound argument throughout the entire article.
